We are in the midst of a public health crisis and youth experiencing homelessness are more susceptible to COVID-19. They are also more likely to become very ill if they contract the virus. Therefore, it is critical that Horizons for Youth takes every action possible to ensure our residents are protected.

Horizons for Youth prioritizes the health and safety of our residents, staff members, volunteers and community partners. We have taken many precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as enforcing new sanitation measures, restricting resident travel out of the building, limiting new intakes, implementing physical distancing practices and cancelling site visits from volunteers, community partners and donors. We are closely following guidelines from the City of Toronto and public health officials.

While we are taking many preventative measures, we are limited in the steps we can take. Horizons for Youth’s residents and staff members do not have the option to completely self-isolate. Our facility is a shared space. However, we cannot close down. If we did, all of the vulnerable young people that live with us would have nowhere to stay. Therefore, we are taking all necessary precautions to protect the health and well-being of our residents and staff team, while offering this needed service.

At this time, we need support from our generous community. We are continually purchasing personal protective equipment for our frontline workers and residents, including masks, gloves and sanitation products. We have also hired a weekly disinfectant service, which disinfects surfaces and objects more effectively than regular cleaning practices, preventing the potential spread of COVID-19. Additionally, our cleaning staff are working extra hours each week so they can clean the facility more frequently. Our frontline workers are also prioritizing providing youth with mental health and wellness care to help them cope with increased feelings of stress, anxiety, isolation and depression.

Please help us weather this crisis and ensure Horizons for Youth’s residents receive the highest quality of care possible during this challenging time.
